Story Starters
SATURDAY, SUNDAY, POWDERDAY
For families short on time – and winter vacations – Snowbird offers the ideal weekend getaway. As the most accessible year-round resort in North America you can hop on an early flight and be on the slopes by noon that same day! And with an average of 500 inches of The Greatest Snow on Earth®, Snowbird gives weekend warriors the best chance for a powder-filled escape from the stresses of home without breaking the bank.
BIRD IS THE WORD
It’s no mystery why so many of the world’s finest pro skiers, riders and photographers call Little Cottonwood Canyon home. With unmatched snow, steeps and backcountry access, there’s a good chance that you’ll be sharing a chair with Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Jeremy Nobis or one of the other superstars of the sport. Come see many of our athletes compete in the U.S. Freeskiing Nationals in March, or call ahead to have us arrange a mountain tour with a homegrown pro.
SUMMER SKIING
Ever wanted to ski and bike on the same day? With 183 days in the 07/08 season, Snowbird’s chairs didn’t stop turning until June 22. And in past years the mountain has stayed open until the Fourth of July! With some of the deepest snow pack and one of the longest seasons in North America, Snowbird is the ultimate spring (and sometimes summer) skiing destination.
THE HARDEST JOB IN SKIING
When it snows an average of 500 inches a year, it takes a lot of work to get the mountain ready for the 9 a.m. Tram. Snowbird’s Ski Patrol has one of the toughest and most unrelenting jobs in the ski industry. In the 07/08 season alone, they set off more than 4,600 hand charges and almost 600 artillery rounds controlling the mountain and Little Cottonwood Canyon (the most avalanche-prone road in North America). This winter, join our snow safety specialist on an early morning route to get the real meaning of “dawn patrol” at Snowbird.
HOOKED FOR LIFE
In this age of internet startups, it seems like no one sticks with the same company anymore. Except for Snowbird President Bob Bonar, Hill Maintenance Director Jim Baker and Snow Safety Director Peter Schory. All have worked for the ‘Bird for more than 30 years and they have a lot of stories to tell (and even more powder stashes that they may or may not be willing to share).
FOOD TO MATCH THE POWDER
Led by Bret Johnson, Snowbird’s Food and Beverage Department is reaching new heights with an impressive staff of veteran chefs creating mountain culinary delights for every palate. The Aerie offers skiers and riders a fantastic selection of sushi topped only by the 10th floor mountain views, while Lodge Bistro Chef R.J. Peterson’s latest menu features delicacies such as double French cut pork chops and grilled eggplant Napoleon. And everything tastes better after a day spent amongst The Greatest Snow on Earth®.
PERENNIAL AWARD WINNER
Snowbird and its neighbor Alta are perennial favorites for skiers, riders and publications around the world. AltaSnowbird was named the #1 ski destination in North America in 2008 by Outside Magazine, and both resorts topped SKI and SKIING magazine categories for powder. Snowbird has also received many accolades for its environmental efforts, including the Golden Eagle Award for Overall Excellence and the Utah Earth Day Award for an environmental cleanup project in American Fork Canyon.
