Sidecountry Camp

Find “The Greatest Snow on Earth”

”There is so much here! How do I get to all this terrain, and more importantly, how do I do it safely?”—-Anonymous

What is “Sidecountry?”According to www.TheSkiingExperts.com, “Unlike backcountry skiing, where you have to actually hike to an off-piste destination, sidecountry skiing is when you utilize the resort’s lifts to get to the summit, and then simply take an uncharted course down to the base. In essence, it’s backcountry skiing without all the hard work.”

This in and sort of out-of- bounds camp uses lift-served access to explore the many acres of sidecountry and untracked snow at Snowbird. This is a great opportunity not only to be introduced to the backcountry skiing experience but also to practice the procedures for leaving the ski resort with a pack, avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel, and choosing terrain to reduce the hazards.

The first day will orient you to the resort and your team. You will practice with your avalanche beacon, learn basic avalanche awareness and explore the snowpack. All of this will be accomplished while skiing or riding some of the greatest terrain on earth!

Day two will find you getting deeper into the secret stashes and hidden pockets that Snowbird is famous for! Day 3 will be a customized adventure according to the ability and desires of each small team. (and, of course, the weather!) Document your travels with technology that will be provided. You will be able to recall you adventures from home when you are back planning your next escape!

Due to the advanced nature of the content of this camp, skiers and riders who are unable to match the pace of the group will be provided with 3 days of skills based coaching, normally a $600 value.

Camp fees include guiding and coaching, early mountain access and video.

All activities begin promptly at their designated times. Please allow a minimum of 60 minutes to arrange for equipment rentals and to get to your designated meeting place. Due to the size of the resort and the number of guests enrolled in activities, we are not able to accommodate late arrivals.

Class lessons are scheduled to be available from NOVEMBER 25, 2011 through April 15, 2012. Private lessons are available by reservation, conditions permitting, from season opening date until April 30, 2012. Mountain School may modify this schedule as needed.

Private lessons and Specialty Camps only will utilize side door Tram access prior to 11:00 a.m.

Snowbird Mountain School cannot extend purchase deadlines, provide refunds, allow students to switch dates between sessions, or provide “make-ups” for missed classes. Due to the unique quality of our resort location, there are times when Little Cottonwood Canyon road and/or lift access is delayed due to avalanche danger. In these cases we monitor the situation closely and send programs out as soon as there is staff available and conditions warrant. Circumstances change with each situation and therefore it is important for guests to communicate with our staff. If lessons are missed due to these extreme circumstances, we will make every effort to accommodate our guests.

Unless otherwise indicated, children’s programs are for 3 – 6 year olds, youth programs are for 7 – 15 year olds, and adult programs are for age 16+.
