Dean Cummings Big Mountain Experience Camp

Big Mountain Skiing and Riding

Skiing consumes me. It’s the magic of all involved, storms, geology, friends, teamwork, technique, timing, planning, traveling, technology, history, and avalanche forecasting. Going super fast down terrain that without snow would be a jagged cliff, its just amazing how all of these small crystals, all different in size and shape, can make the unthinkable possible, the driving force of our lives. Skiing is life!—- Dean Cummings

The Big Mountain Camps, hosted by Dean, outline the skills and knowledge necessary to safely access the backcountry and wild terrain unique to the Alps, Alaska, and many top US resorts, including Snowbird. Dean has dedicated his life to skiing and his impact on it changes the way people look at the sport. Dean has and always will give 100% on the descent while putting people in the moment.” Combining lift, backcountry, and heli access in Utah’s Wasatch Range, this four-day/ four-night camp is hosted at the Cliff Lodge with spa access.

    Camps Reservation Form

    Dear Camp Participants,

This camp will focus on performance skiing while increasing your knowledge on how to read the terrain and bring your skills to the next level. It is our goal to provide you with the confidence, education, and friendships that you can use to excel in your future backcountry travels and all-mountain skiing endeavors.

Everything will be done in a group setting, emphasizing the teamwork that big mountain travel demands. During our preliminary team meeting, you will be briefed on physical conditioning, nutrition, and safety protocol. At this time, you will have the opportunity to communicate areas of your skiing you would like to work on and your overall expectations.

Over breakfast, we will go over the day’s itinerary, revisit safety protocol and discuss snow and weather conditions. Once gear has been checked, we will team up to learn from one another. We will instruct you on summit and ridge protocol, route selection, ski technique- regarding the descent and snow conditions- snow pack assessment, digging snow pits, evaluating snow stability and proper slope cutting techniques. This information will be used to form a game plan for the descent. After each descent we will evaluate and discuss the run as a group to help you improve and get the most out of your skiing.

Education, friendship and fun are the main objectives of this camp. You can expect to learn: backcountry ethics, big mountain descent techniques, group dynamics, mountain terminology, avalanche transceiver use, snow stability assessment, slope cutting, route selection, slough management skills, weather interpretation, ski and snowboard anchor systems, rappelling and rope skills, and mechanized access protocol. We will integrate all of these skills into a hands-on, educational day of skiing and snowboarding.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask myself or any of my H2O staff or guides. We want to make this camp one of the best ski experiences of your life!
