“Skiing in Color” Gallery Show to Open at the Snowbird Center
Snowbird, Utah, – Set to open to the public on May 6, 2021, Snowbird is proud to host a gallery show from Park City-based artist Lamont Joseph White’s collection, “Skiing in Color.” The collection depicts an array of Black and brown skiers and snowboarders in the snow space, from high-fashion scenes to joyful portraits.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to show these impactful and vibrant pieces right at the heart of the Snowbird Village, inside the Snowbird Center,” commented Snowbird President and General Manager Dave Fields. “As we continue to work towards making the snow space more inclusive to all, we hope that by highlighting these works we can both inspire participation from diverse communities and foster an inclusive mindset.”
Painted during White’s residency in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, “Skiing in Color” was coincidentally released alongside nationwide discussions of racial tension, though the inspiration for his work draws from lifelong experiences. White’s joyful and colorful work lies in stark contrast to the decades-long issues it strives to address while paying homage to notable Black figures such as Rosa Parks and Fredric Douglas as well as imaginary, everyday characters.
“It is incredible to partner with Snowbird, a magnificent and legendary resort that’s been a favorite of mine for almost 20 years,” says White. “While I’ve observed the infrequency of Black and brown faces in the mountains over the decades, concurrently, I have also been keenly aware of the virtual nonexistence of representation at resorts, hotels and galleries in our mountain spaces. I’m grateful and honored that Snowbird saw my vision, and took the step to collaborate in a way I haven’t seen or experienced to this point. It’s my hope that my art will be part of an invitation, celebration and conversation.”
The gallery will be free for all to view at the Bird’s Nest room, located on Level 2 of the Snowbird Center. To celebrate the show, a gallery opening event is planned for Thursday, May 6, from 2-3 p.m. and will be open to the public. White will be introduced by Fields, and the artist will also host a question-and-answer session. All attendees will be required to wear face coverings.
