Environment

Building a sustainable future.

Through our Play Forever commitment, Snowbird invests in environmental sustainability projects, participates in scientific research and proactively advocates for policy change to help create a more resilient world.

Energy

Since 1986, Snowbird has been the only resort in North America to operate a cogeneration facility. A new and improved facility, Snowbird Power Systems, was installed in 2021 and powers The Cliff Lodge, Snowbird Center, the Aerial Tram and other chairlifts with a focus on energy efficiency.

  • Cogeneration creates energy and heat simultaneously, reducing emissions and resource consumption compared to traditional production
  • Upgrading the facility has made it 60% more efficient electrically
  • Snowbird Power Systems saves 62,000 dekatherms of natural gas a year—the equivalent of removing the emissions of 789 passenger vehicles for one year

Ecosystems

We might be biased, but we think Little Cottonwood Canyon is one of the most special places in the world. Snowbird is committed to protecting this ecosystem year-round via financial contributions, reclamation work and education.

One of the ways guests can learn about our unique ecosystem and how we can work together to protect it is by attending a Play Forever presentation. In the past Snowbird has hosted The Nature Conservancy, film premieres and speakers from the United States Forest Service to present on topics specific to Little Cottonwood Canyon and the work being done to preserve it.

Waste

Snowbird continues to seek and implement practices that reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfills. While this is no small feat at 11,000 feet, we are proud to have made measurable impacts that continue to grow year over year.

From reducing single-use plastic throughout the resort, implementing a robust food composting program in nearly every Snowbird kitchen and training our employees on how to properly implement our recycling programs, these seemingly small efforts add up to a big difference.
